Follow the given steps to insert the Flash Movies into PowerPoint Slides:

Make sure before inserting the Flash Movies into PowerPoint slides that you have installed the Flash Player on your computer.

First of all open the presentation in which you want to insert Flash movie file.

Now click on "Toolbar" option from the "View" menu and choose the option "Control Toolbox".

Here a small floating menu will appear with the title "Control Toolbox".

Using "Control Toolbox" toolbar, click on the icon that looks like hammer for more controls and scrolling the objects then choose the object "Shockwave Flash Object".

Now using your mouse pointer, draw the box size and position where you want to play a flash movie.

Now right click on box and select the "Properties" option.

A small properties dialog box will appear with different options.

Under the Alphabetic tab, click the option "Movie" and type the full file path of flash movie in blank cell next to Movie (for example d:\flash_file).

Again under same tab, set the property "True" for "Playing" and "EmbedMovie" objects to add and play the flash file automatically with slide. Here you can also set the Quality, Width, Scale and Windows Mode objects for flash file.

Hiding icons on the bottom of your screen

By using this tip you can hide the useless icons on the bottom of your system screen (right end of the taskbar). Because some of the icons will useful for you on system tray area but may be others list of icons not useful for you so you can hide all extra icon very easily. Many programs that run in the background on your computer but you are not using regularly such as antivirus software, volume controller, backup applications. The system tray can get cluttered with useless icon, so you may not wants to display them on the tray.

To hide those icons that you do not use regularly, follow these steps.

First of all right-click on the windows taskbar and choose Properties.

Here a new dialog box will appear with title "Taskbar and start Menu Properties" and then click on "Customize…"button that appears on lower right portion.

Now again a new dialog box will appear with title "Customize Notifications".
Under Current Items area, select the program that you want to change the behavior. On the right of the program name a drop-down menu appears for example "Always hide, Always show and Hide when inactive".

You choose to hide the program’s Icon, when it is inactive, to always hide the icon, or to always show it.

Select the option you want and click on OK button, then again click on OK button to finish the process.

Remove the text from the Desktop icon

Desktop is the interface of Windows, which contain the icons, taskbar etc. that allow the user to interact with the computer to perform different operations. Usually the picture of icon represents its purpose so if you want your desktop looking very clean then you can remove the title under the desktop icons. May be you are thinking it is so easy, just go to rename option and set blank name or single spacebar entry but the problem is this, windows will not allow you to set blank name or name with single spacebar entry. Here interesting thing is this; window will allow you to use the ASCII code for a space, which is 0160.

First clear all the text from that icon

Now type the ASCII code, simply hold the Alt key, type the number 0160 from the number pad and release the Alt key then press Enter button to finish the process.

But if you want to remove the text of multiple icons, then repeat the above process with adding one extra ASCII code for second icon, (for example for second icon you type the 0160 twice and for third icon type 0160 three times with Alt key and so on).

Enable or disable the windows firewall in windows 7

All the entering or leaving traffic from your computer pass through the firewall, which inspect the all types of traffic and either allow or deny the traffic depending upon the firewall settings. Microsoft includes the built-in firewall feature in all latest windows operating systems like windows XP, Vista and now in windows 7.

Follow the given steps to configure built-in firewall in windows 7:

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

First click on Start button and then click on Control Panel option.

Now in Control Panel click on “System and Security” link to go next.

On next page, you can see the firewall link “Windows Firewall”, Click on this link to configure the firewall.

There are many options on the left side panel of this page regarding firewall configurations under “Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall”, For example

Change notification settings
Turn Windows Firewall on or off
Restore defaults
Advanced settings

On the right side panel, you can see the two types of link for firewall settings, For example

Home or Work (Private) networks
Public networks

Now in left side panel, click on Change notification settings to customize the firewall settings.

By default windows firewall is on for both private and public network, here you can turn off the default firewall policies.

To allow the default or recommended settings either click on the Use recommended settings button on the right pane or click on the Restore default link on the left side panel.

Here click on the Restore default button and a restore defaults confirmation message will be opened, Click on Yes button.

But if you are a expert user then you can use the Advance Settings link on left side panel to configure the advance firewall settings for inbound and outbound traffic according to your need.

Click on the Inbound Rules link in the left side panel. You can see here a list of all Inbound Rules is displayed. On clicking an enabled rule, a list of actions is shown in the Actions Pane. Click on Disable Rule to disable the selected rule. You can also Cut, Copy and Delete the rule.

Seven years after Apple began selling music a la carte, what have listeners bought?

The odometer that has been counting song downloads on Apple's (AAPL) iTunes Store for the past week and a half hit the 10 billion mark shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 24 – a day that happens to be, coincidentally, Steve Jobs' 55th birthday.

To celebrate what it is billing as "one huge milestone for music," the company has promised to award whomever downloaded the 10 billionth song a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

Apple can afford it. The company says it runs iTunes at just above break-even; its main purpose, after all, is to sell Apple's hardware.

But since it opened for business in April 2003, the iTunes Store has become America's No. 1 music vendor, generating revenues of $520 million in the last quarter alone, according to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster (see below).

It may be 10 days before Apple tells us who won the $10,00 gift-card. (In case of a tie, the winner will be chosen randomly.)

I have trouble imaging how anyone would spend $10,000 at the iTunes Store, given the fact that it has taken me seven years to amass a library of 6,225 songs and podcasts.

But then I am not Apple's typical music customer — a point made abundantly clear to me by the list the company has posted of the 20 Most-Downloaded iTunes Songs of All Time. Of the 20, I own exactly one. (Suffice it to say, it was not one of the top 6, which included two Black Eyed Peas songs, two Lady GaGas, a Jason Mraz and a Coldplay.)

Laptop for every pupil in Uruguay

362,000 pupils in Uruguay now have the distinctive laptops.

Uruguay has joined the small number of nations providing a laptop for every child attending state primary school.

President Tabaré Vázquez presented the final XO model laptops to pupils at a school in Montevideo on 13 October.

Over the last two years 362,000 pupils and 18,000 teachers have been involved in the scheme.

The "Plan Ceibal" (Education Connect) project has allowed many families access to the world of computers and the internet for the first time.

Uruguay is part of the One Laptop Per Child scheme, an organisation set up by internet pioneer Nicholas Negroponte. His original vision was to provide laptops at $100 (£61) but they proved more expensive.

The Uruguay programme has cost the state $260 (£159) per child, including maintenance costs, equipment repairs, training for the teachers and internet connection.

The total figure represents less than 5% of the country's education budget.

Around 70% of the XO model laptops handed out by the government were given to children who did not have computers at home.

"This is not simply the handing out of laptops or an education programme. It is a programme which seeks to reduce the gap between the digital world and the world of knowledge," explained Miguel Brechner, director of the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay and in charge of Plan Ceibal.

In a similar project, every child in the tiny South Pacific nation of Niue has an OLPC laptop. In 2008, Portugal committed to giving Intel Classmate laptops to every six-10 year old in the country.

"A revolution"

In the run up to Uruguay's general election on 25 October, the project is being promoted as an achievement of the Tabaré Vázquez government.

"It's been a revolution, which has helped us enormously, but it hasn't been easy," explained Lourdes Bardino, head teacher of School 173 in Las Piedras.

Ms Bardino said that some teachers were originally opposed to the introduction of the XO laptops.

"We have a lady who's been teaching for 30 years and when they gave us the computers and the training, she asked for leave because she didn't want to have anything to do with the programme. Later she changed her mind and now computers have changed the way she teaches."

All the teachers have been given training, but the extent to which they use the laptops in the classroom is up to them.

Research carried out recently by the State Education authorities revealed that some teachers have chosen not to include computer-related work in their lesson plans.

Costs and criticisms

The laptops have an open source Linux operating system with a user interface called Sugar. It has attracted some criticism from detractors for not being mainstream.

However Mr Brechner believes that children should learn computer skills regardless of the software available. Blind children were being taught on a Microsoft Windows operating system, he said.

The annual cost of maintaining the programme, including an information portal for pupils and teachers, will be US$21 (£13) per child.

Now that all the schoolchildren have their computers, the authorities say that they will endeavour keep the schools connected, particularly those in rural areas, where many still do not have internet access.

There are plans to extend the scheme to secondary schools and pre-school children next year.

iPad name draws feminine hygiene jokes

Some female bloggers wonder if any women were on Apple's iPad team.

San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Punch lines about hygiene products flooded the blogosphere on Wednesday only moments after Apple Inc. announced it would call its new touch-screen computer the "iPad."

"The mocking goes along the lines of: Yes, the iPad is small, lightweight and slim. But can you swim with it?" wrote the Los Angeles Times' tech blog.

The term iTampon -- a riff on the fact that the iPad can be taken to sound more like a maxipad than a slick new computer -- was the third most-talked about trend on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

Some female bloggers wrote that Apple seemed not to have any women on its marketing team.

"With "iTampon" quickly emerging as a trending Twitter topic, it's probably safe to say that many women found themselves cringing as they asked, 'Do any women work at Apple?' " wrote Annie Colbert on the blog "Holy Kaw!"

The tech community has discussed the name for Apple's new keyboard-less computer for months if not years. Rumor had it that the device might be called the iSlate, but one reporter at Apple's San Francisco event joked that the term "slate" might sound too ancient or heavy for a lightweight lap computer.

"Slate is a little bit 'Flintstones,' " said Stephen Hutcheon, an editor at The Sydney Morning Herald, a newspaper in Australia.

It's also unclear what people should call the category of computers that now includes the iPad. Some refer to computers without keyboards and with touch-screens as "slate computers."

Others call them tablets, a term that also can refer to '90s devices with keyboards and pens attached.

After Apple unveiled the iPad at an invitation-only event, some tech journalists said they thought the jokes about feminine hygiene would dissipate soon.

The name "iPod" sounded strange at first, for example, and now is a part of the standard vocabulary, said Hutcheon.

"If you think of iPods in 2001, we probably got the same smirks," he said. "I think the jokes will disappear."

He added that one could take "pad" to mean "home," which is where Apple CEO Steve Jobs hopes many people will use the iPad to read books, watch movies and the like.

Andy Ihnatko, a tech columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, said Apple could call its new gadget a "mangled baby duck" and people would still buy it, both because Apple has sex appeal and because the iPad is a good product.

"With the right device, marketing doesn't really matter," he said.

The name iPad sticks with Apple's "i" line of branding and is therefore a smart move, said Jacqui Cheng, a senior writer at the tech site Ars Technica.

"I don't hate it," she said of the name. "I don't know if I love it, but it's OK."

CES 2010: The Best And Worst Laptops

HP and Lenovo made the biggest splash in terms of notebooks during this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in

Las Vegas. Lenovo, makers of the ThinkPad line of business notebooks, are determined to grab a larger market share among consumers this year.

The new IdeaPad S10 Tablet is an Intel Atom-based netbook with a 10-inch touchscreen that rotates 180 degrees in either direction. Available with either a flush 3-cell battery or extended life 6-cell battery this netbook tablet looks like it will give the ASUS Eee PC T91 a run for the money. As we've come to expect with Lenovo notebooks, the keyboard on the new S10 Tablet is second to none in this form factor. The screen bezel might be large, but that was done on purpose to provide more room for the larger keyboard. The keys feel fantastic with just the right amount of throw and there is no sign of flex in the pre-production keyboard we used.

Some Smartbooks Are Smarter Than Others
Smartbooks, a new category of thin and light laptops that bridge the gap between a smartphone and a netbook, will probably be a major push from several manufacturers in 2010. The Lenovo Skylight was the first of these smartbooks to go public.

Sure, the Skylight is thin and lightweight. It's also got a great keyboard and screen. It even has the smartphone-like ability to almost instantly wake from sleep mode (a huge time saver compared to netbooks and ultraportable notebooks). However, the smartphone-like user interface just screams out for a touchscreen. The fact that user will have to control the Skylight with a standard touchpad and keyboard is probably the least smart element of this smartbook. Yes, a standard display makes the Skylight thinner, lighter, and cheaper but we're starting to think that smartbooks, like all modern smartphones, really need to have a touchscreen.

Thankfully, it looks like our editors aren't alone in wanting smartbooks with touchscreens. Although HP isn't ready to announce a touchscreen smartbook, they did have an extremely interesting smartbook prototype on display at CES this year. The yet-to-be-named HP smartbook is based on HP's current Mini family of netbooks, but this ultraportable is thinner, lighter, and based on the Snapdragon ARM II processor just like the Lenovo Skylight. The HP smartbook prototype runs a customized version of the Google Android operating system and, more importantly, features a touchscreen like you'd expect to see on a device that's intended to act like an enlarged smartphone.

HP representatives were all quick to point out that this prototype may never see the light of day, but it should serve as an indication of what form factor HP thinks will work best for the smartbook category.

Not to be outdone, Lenovo also debuted the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 hybrid netbook and slate tablet/smartbook. Our entire staff was pretty impressed with this innovative concept ... and even more impressed that it's ready for sale. The IdeaPad U1 works just like a standard Intel Atom-based netbook with a full keyboard and touchpad running Windows 7, but with the flip of a switch you can unplug the touchscreen display and you've got an ARM-based tablet PC ready for travel with it's own operating system and flash storage. What makes the U1 even cooler is that you can connect the bottom half of system to an external monitor and use it as a Windows desktop PC while the top tablet portion of the laptop is being used by someone else. When you reconnect the tablet to the bottom half of the laptop then the data will automatically synchronize so that you don't lose your work. Time will tell whether consumers want smartbooks with thin standard screens or if they're willing to buy a slightly thicker smartbook with a touchscreen interface.

Best Buy Gives You The Blues
One of the major stories from Sony, Dell, and Toshiba at the 2010 CES was their partnerships with Best Buy. Best Buy's Blue Label 2.0 program will introduce exclusive notebooks that will only be available from Best Buy. The lineup includes a 14" Toshiba notebook, 15.6" Dell, and a 13" Sony. All of the Blue Label 2.0 notebooks feature Intel Wireless Display technology, enabling consumers to wirelessly stream HD video and pictures directly from the notebook to HDTVs. For example, Hulu and Netflix shows can be streamed in up to 720p quality. The notebooks feature the latest Intel Core i5 processors and start at $899.99.

While the Dell and Sony Blue Label notebooks are nice, we were most impressed by the Toshiba Blue Label laptop we saw at CES. The fresh design of the new Toshiba Satellite E205 14-inch notebook looks quite different from previous Toshiba offerings, and the addition of Intel Wireless Display technology should prove to be extremely exciting for consumers. Research suggests that many shoppers ask for laptops with HDMI out so that they can connect their notebooks to their HDTVs, but most of those same consumers never bother to connect the two devices because running a physical cable from your laptop to your TV is rather inconvenient. Wireless display technology finally solves this problem and should help the laptop become the wireless center of your home theater.

2010: The Year of AMD?
One of the biggest and perhaps most welcome changes on the show floor at this year's CES was the high visibility of laptops with AMD processors and ATI graphics. Dell, HP, Toshiba, MSI, Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo are just a few of the manufacturers offering high-profile laptops with AMD processors and/or ATI graphics in 2010. Although Intel still dominates the top of the CPU food chain with while multi-core CPUs like the Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, AMD is in a great position to dominate the ultraportable and budget mainstream laptop market in 2010. Ultraportable laptops like the Lenovo ThinkPad X100e and Acer Ferrari One offer fantastic performance and usability thanks to AMD processors and ATI graphics while keeping costs low enough for people to afford during rough financial times. ATI may likely continue to hold the largest market share for laptop graphics thanks to a strong price-to-performance ratio, but let's hope AMD/ATI learn a lesson from NVIDIA in 2010 and start offering mobile GPU drivers on their website.

Worst In Show: Rebadged Netbooks
If there was a single blemish on the shine from this year's CES it has to be in the netbook category. Despite new graphics options such as NVIDIA's ION or entirely new platforms such as AMD's CONGO processors and graphics, most of the netbooks we saw at CES were just minor refreshes of old netbooks with the latest Intel Pineview Atom processors. While it's true that the newest Intel Atom processors are a little beefier than previous models and the latest Intel integrated graphics are better (particularly when paired with the latest Adobe Flash plugin), these Atom-based netbooks are still horribly underpowered and simply don't deliver a great user experience. Manufacturers still haven't realized that consumers want more than just the same weak hardware inside a new netbook shell.

China denies involvement in Google cyberattacks

After warning of strained U.S.-China relations, China's government has issued statements denying any state involvement in the cyberattacks on Google and defending its online censorship.

The statements, issued Monday Beijing time and carried on the state news agency Xinhua, come nearly two weeks after Google threatened to pull out of the country after finding that e-mail accounts belonging to human rights activists had been compromised.

Any "accusation that the Chinese government participated in [any] cyberattack, either in an explicit or inexplicit way, is groundless and aims to denigrate China," an unidentified spokesman for China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology told Xinhua. "We [are] firmly opposed to that."

In a statement posted to China's official Web site, the State Council Information Office defended China's regulation of the Internet as legal and said it should be free of interference from outside parties.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton formally denounced Internet censorship in a speech Thursday that was directed both at the private and public sectors. For corporations, she said, "Censorship should not be accepted by any company from anywhere. American companies need to make a principled stand."

China, which has stated that companies doing business in that country must respect and adhere to its laws, responded by warning that the new U.S. stance could hurt relations between the two countries.

"The U.S. has criticized China's policies to administer the Internet and insinuated that China restricts Internet freedom...This runs contrary to the facts and is harmful to China-U.S. relations," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Google disclosed the attacks targeting it and other U.S. companies on January 12 and said the attacks originated in China. The company said it discovered the attacks in mid-December and while it did not specifically implicate the Chinese government, it says that as a result of the incidents, it may withdraw from doing business in China.

Source code was stolen from some of more than 30 Silicon Valley companies targeted in the attack, sources said. Adobe Systems has confirmed that it was targeted by an attack, and sources have said Yahoo, Symantec, Juniper Networks, Northrop Grumman, and Dow Chemical also were targets.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 (Pine Trail)

Dell’s netbooks have always been in the middle of the pack. They’ve typically offered sleek designs and plenty of customization options, but not the best ergonomics or battery life. This time around Dell took full advantage of Intel’s new Atom N450 processor (Pine Trail) to give its Inspiron Mini 10 a major boost of endurance. Thanks in part to this more efficient CPU, the Mini 10 offers over 9 hours of battery life without a bulging battery. We especially like the more distinctive look, not to mention the several fun color options. You also get a 250GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Starter Edition. At $369, the Mini 10 is fiscally attractive, too. But has Dell done enough to catch up to the likes of Acer, ASUS, and Toshiba?

Design

Dell’s new Mini 10 is a fairly dramatic departure from its predecessor. This netbook sports a wedge-shape design with a lid that sits on top of the deck instead of dropping down behind the body. When closed, the rear of the deck is exposed, bringing to mind the design of Dell’s original high-priced Adamo. The black deck is also imprinted with a crosshatch pattern that adds a nice texture. At 10.5 x 7.7 x 1.3 inches, the Mini 10 is a shade larger than the Toshiba mini NB305, and is also larger than the older Mini 10 (10.3 x 7.2 x 1.3 inches). Weighing 3.0 pounds even, this model is also slightly heavier than the netbook norm of 2.8 pounds.

The shell of our Mini 10 was made of white plastic, which hides fingerprints well despite having a glossy finish. Other color options include black, blue, green, pink, purple, and red. Users will also have the option to select one of 229 different lids from the Dell Design Studio, ranging from a New York Yankees pattern to artists’ designs and lipstick colors. Personalization doesn’t come cheap however; these options cost $85.

Heat

After playing a Hulu video for 15 minutes at full screen, the Mini 10 got toasty. The touchpad measured 95 degrees Fahrenheit, the space between the G and H keys was 100 degrees, and the center of the underside measured 108 degrees. The right section of the underside towards the front measured a disturbing 120 degrees after this test, but in the 104- to 108-degree range with little to no activity. We consider anything higher than 100 degrees to be unpleasant.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The style of the Mini 10’s keyboard has also changed. Instead of being completely flat, the keys are now terraced so that the top is smaller than the base, but still wide enough for us to type comfortably for extended stretches. Some may prefer the Toshiba mini NB305’s metal island-style keyboard because it has more space in between the keys, but the Mini 10 beats that system when it comes to its more solid feedback.

Unfortunately, Dell kept its touchpad with integrated mouse buttons. On the plus side, this allowed the company to keep the Mini 10’s touchpad large at 3.0 x 1.4 inches. However, the buttons are quite small, and not as usable as a traditional setup. Since the last Mini 10 (and 11z), Dell has switched from an Elantech to a Synaptics driver, and no longer supports multitouch gestures such as rotating, two-finger scrolling, and pinching to zoom. This may be a good thing, since those gestures were tricky to use on the previous Mini 10s. Still, those who concurrently use both their right and left hands on the touchpad will find it more difficult to use; the cursor would sometimes move before we clicked down, which was annoying. Overall, we prefer larger touchpads with discrete touchpad buttons, which is exactly what you’ll find on such systems as the Toshiba mini NB305.

Apple, labels talk music in the cloud

(CNET) -- Apple executives have spoken to the top four recording companies about plans to offer a streaming music service free of charge to consumers, multiple music industry sources told CNET.

Apple's managers haven't revealed many details about their plans but did discuss offering iTunes users a means to store copies of their music libraries on Apple's servers.

One thing that Robertson and music insiders can agree on: Apple has its heads in the cloud.

would include the ability to back up music and access songs off the Web from any Internet-connected device and conceivably from anywhere in the world.

Apple's song downloads apparently aren't affected. Apple has told some music executives that they see the streaming feature as a "value add" that could help stimulate download sales. Apple indicated in talks that the streaming service could be ready to roll out as soon as this spring.

It's unlikely but not impossible that Apple will announce the streaming service at a planned January 27 press event, where Steve Jobs & Co. are widely expected to unveil a new tablet device.

Apple hasn't disclosed the details of the plan yet to the four big recording companies, according to sources with knowledge of the discussions. To offer this kind of streaming service -- even if it is to store and distribute music already purchased by a consumer -- my sources said Apple may be required to negotiate new agreements with the labels.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Apple piqued the curiosity of iTunes fans last month when it acquired Lala, a struggling streaming music service. Since then, plenty of people have guessed that Apple was planning to use Lala and its managers to help stream music and possibly video as well.

Michael Roberton, the founder of MP3.com and one of the tech sector's best-known agitators, caused more speculation Tuesday when he wrote at TechCrunch: "Apple plans to upgrade their users almost over night to a cloud music service in an ambitious move to beat Amazon and others." He cited unnamed music industry sources.

Robertson told me Wednesday that many people involved in digital music believe Apple is vulnerable when it comes to cloud computing. Streaming content is considered by many to be the next wave in digital entertainment, and Apple hasn't had much of a profile in this area.

In the past two years, consumers have shown they like streaming music. Pandora, the 10-year-old streaming radio service, last week announced it had recorded its first profitable quarter.

Robertson said he expects to see an "upload" button on iTunes as part of a future update.

Still, Robertson contends an iTunes streaming plan could be problematic for the music industry. There's a possibility that Apple may not believe it must compensate or even acquire new licenses to stream legally purchased songs to owners, Robertson said.

As the largest music retailer in the world, Apple has the kind of muscle to launch the service without asking for permission, according to Robertson.

"I've talked to one of the labels guys about this," Robertson said during our interview. "The person said the labels aren't very happy, but they aren't sure Apple won't try to jam this through regardless of what the labels want. Apple can say, 'We're selling 2 billion songs and this is what we're doing.'"

On the issue of whether iTunes needs licenses to stream legally purchased music, Robertson has some experience. He is fighting a copyright lawsuit filed two years ago by EMI Music against his streaming-music service, MP3tunes.com.

EMI argues that MP3tunes doesn't have authorization to exploit the company's music this way. Robertson counters that there's nothing illegal about storing and streaming someone's legally purchased songs. His case should come to some conclusion later this year.

Another possible conflict between Apple and the labels could come when Apple's streaming service begins to harm subscription music services, Robertson said.

If Apple is allowed to stream music to a user anywhere in the world, why would anyone pay $8 a month for a subscription? I pointed out that subscription services also offer all-you-can-eat music. Robertson said that by and large, the most important songs to music fans are those they already own.

"An iTunes streaming service could close the window of opportunity for the labels to create a new type of subscription service," Robertson said.

Maybe so, but two music industry insiders told me the kind of acrimonious relationship between Apple and the labels described by Robertson doesn't exist. The two sides have had a decent give-and-take relationship for years. A move by Apple to force streaming music down the throats of the record companies would be out of character and not in Apple's interest, they said.

Another reason that Robertson's prediction doesn't ring true to some in the music industry is that the labels won't necessarily require added compensation for a streaming service, my sources indicated. They say it's a little hard to for anyone to assess that since Apple hasn't disclosed its plans.

Click Action > Create VHD and you can now create a new virtual drive of your own (right-click it, select Initialise Disk, and after it's set up right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to set this up). Again, you'll be left with a virtual drive that behaves just like any other, where you can drag and drop files, install programs, test partitioning software or do whatever you like. But it's actually just this VHD file on your real hard drive which you can easily back up or share with others. Right-click the disk (that's the left-hand label that says "Disk 2" or whatever) and select Detach VHD to remove it.

The command line DISKPART utility has also been upgraded with tools to detach a VHD file, and an EXPAND command to increase a virtual disk's maximum size. Don't play around with this unless you know what you're doing, though - it's all too easy to trash your system.

4. Troubleshoot problems
If some part of Windows 7 is behaving strangely, and you don't know why, then click Control Panel > Find and fix problems (or 'Troubleshooting') to access the new troubleshooting packs. These are simple wizards that will resolve common problems, check your settings, clean up your system and more.

5. Startup repair
If you've downloaded Windows 7 (and even if you haven't) it's a good idea to create a system repair disc straight away in case you run into problems booting the OS later on. Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc, and let Windows 7 build a bootable emergency disc. If the worst does happen then it could be the only way to get your PC running again.

6. Take control
Tired of the kids installing dubious software or running applications you'd rather they left alone? AppLocker is a new Windows 7 feature that ensures users can only run the programs you specify. Don't worry, that's easier to set up than it sounds: you can create a rule to allow everything signed by a particular publisher, so choose Microsoft, say, and that one rule will let you run all signed Microsoft applications. Launch GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker to get a feel for how this works.

7. Calculate more
At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more.

Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value, then - there are some very powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

8. Switch to a projector
Windows 7 now provides a standard way to switch your display from one monitor to another, or a projector - just press Win+P or run DisplaySwitch.exe and choose your preferred display. (This will have no effect if you've only one display connected.)

9. Get a power efficiency report
If you have a laptop, you can use the efficiency calculator to get Windows 7 to generate loads of useful information about its power consumption. Used in the right way, this can help you make huge gains in terms of battery life and performance. To do this you must open a command prompt as an administrator by typing 'cmd' in Start Search, and when the cmd icon appears, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.

Then at the command line, just type in 'powercfg -energy' (without quotes) and hit Return, and Windows 7 will scan your system looking for ways to improve power efficiency. It will then publish the results in an HTML file, usually in the System32 folder. Just follow the path it gives you to find your report.

10. Understanding System Restore
Using System Restore in previous versions of Windows has been something of a gamble. There's no way of telling which applications or drivers it might affect - you just have to try it and see.

Windows 7 is different. Right-click Computer, select Properties > System Protection > System Restore > Next, and choose the restore point you'd like to use. Click the new button to 'Scan for affected programs' and Windows will tell you which (if any) programs and drivers will be deleted or recovered by selecting this restore point. 11. Set the time zone
System administrators will appreciate the new command line tzutil.exe utility, which lets you set a PC's time zone from scripts. If you wanted to set a PC to Greenwich Mean Time, for instance, you'd use the command

tzutil /s "gmt standard time"

The command "tzutil /g" displays the current time zone, "tzutil /l" lists all possible time zones, and "tzutil /?" displays details on how the command works.

12. Calibrate your screen
The colours you see on your screen will vary depending on your monitor, graphics cards settings, lighting and more, yet most people use the same default Windows colour profile. And that means a digital photo you think looks perfect might appear very poor to everybody else. Fortunately Windows 7 now provides a Display Colour Calibration Wizard that helps you properly set up your brightness, contrast and colour settings, and a ClearType tuner to ensure text is crisp and sharp. Click Start, type DCCW and press Enter to give it a try.

13. Clean up Live Essentials

Installing Windows Live Essentials will get you the new versions of Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and others - great. Unfortunately it also includes other components that may be unnecessary, but if you like to keep a clean system then these can be quickly removed.

If you left the default "Set your search provider" option selected during installation, for instance, Windows Live will install Choice Guard, a tool to set your browser home page and search engine, and prevent other programs from changing them. If this causes problems later, or you just decide you don't need it, then Choice Guard may be removed by clicking Start, typing msiexec /x and pressing [Enter].

Windows Live Essentials also adds an ActiveX Control to help upload your files to Windows Live SkyDrive, as well as the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, which makes it easier to manage and switch between multiple Windows Live accounts. If you're sure you'll never need either then remove them with the Control Panel "Uninstall a Program" applet.

14. Add network support

By default Windows Live MovieMaker won't let you import files over a network, but a quick Registry tweak will change this. Run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker, add a DWORD value called AllowNetworkFiles and set it to 1 to add network support.

15. Activate XP mode

If you've old but important software that no longer runs under Windows 7, then you could try using XP Mode, a virtual copy of XP that runs in a window on your Windows 7 desktop. But there's a big potential problem, as XP Mode only works with systems that have hardware virtualisation (AMD-V or Intel VT) built-in and turned on. If you've a compatible CPU then this may just be a matter of enabling the option in your BIOS set-up program, however some high profile brands, including Sony Vaio, disable the setting for "security reasons". And that blocks XP Mode from working, too.

One solution has emerged, but it's a little risky, as essentially you'll have to alter a byte in your laptop firmware and hope this doesn't have any unexpected side-effects. Gulp. If you're feeling brave then take a look at the Feature Enable Blog for the details, but don't blame us if it goes wrong.

A safer approach might be to use VirtualBox, a virtualisation tool that doesn't insist on hardware support, but then you will need to find a licensed copy of XP (or whatever other Windows version your software requires) for its virtual machine.

Amazon talks up the Kindle as its best-selling product, but even the market leader won't say how many digital readers it has sold. Sony has long had its own readers and Barnes & Noble has jumped into the fray with the Nook. But it hasn't stopped there.

Plenty of other would-be rivals showed up at CES, each hoping to make a name for themselves. But, that could be tough, analysts say.

"Just being able to read a book on a device has become totally commoditized," said Gartner analyst Allen Weiner.

Indeed, the special e-book zone on the CES show floor was packed with book readers that looked like Kindle cousins, many sporting a nearly identical-looking electronic ink displays and little else of note.

Some, though did stand out. Several of the more anticipated e-readers had either bigger-thank-Kindle screens, like Plastic Logic's Que and the Skiff or, like Spring Design's Alex and the Entourage Edge, had a color LCD screen in addition to the e-ink display. But more screen real estate also typically means higher prices.

Spring Design wants $359 for its dual-screen device, while Plastic Logic said its Que will start at $649--and neither of those models have cellular connections. A pricier Que does offer an AT&T 3G connection, but sells for $799.

Beyond price, there's also the matter of getting on consumer's radar screens at all. Barnes & Noble is able to use its brand and large number of stores to garner attention for the Nook, while others are also trying to grab both mindshare and shelf space. The Que will be sold through Barnes & Noble, which powers its book store, while Spring Design on Thursday announced a partnership with Borders that the device maker says will eventually see the Alex inside Borders stores. Skiff, meanwhile, is counting on Sprint, which powers its wireless features and will carry the device in 1,000 of its stores.

And, if all those concerns weren't enough, there's also the looming Apple threat. "Certainly if an Apple tablet does come out and does what's expected it will instantly change the game," Weiner said.

Although most of the attention at CES was on new hardware, executives of Hearst-backed Skiff say their main goal is to build a good periodical platform and shopping experience that could someday power lots of devices, perhaps none of which the company would make itself.

"We want to lead by example with some cool devices and then get the hell out as fast as possible," said Skiff Chief Marketing Officer Kiliaen Van Rensselaer.

Some e-reader efforts are trying to bypass electronic-ink readers altogether. Ray Kurzweil's Blio focuses on using the power of tablets and smartphones to allow for digital books that combine text with video, audio and Web content. The Blio store, set to go live in the coming weeks, will initially work on both the PC and the iPhone.

Kurzweil, a pioneer in the digital reading arena in addition to being a computer industry luminary, says he just doesn't see that big a market for single purpose readers.

"People want to do everything--they want to watch their movies, they want to do all their computing, their e-mail on one platform," he said in an interview. "They don't want to take another device."

Whenever user connect a Windows Mobile device to Windows Vista Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) via a USB cable, WMDC fails to connect to the Pocket PC (PPC) Phone device, causing synchronization not start or fail. Sometimes, WMDC may tries to connect to mobile device with “Connecting” message for a while, but eventually fails with “Disconnected” message. In some worse case, Windows Vista doesn’t detect any Windows Mobile device been connected, and no response or connect attempt action in WMDC.

In Device Manager, Windows Mobile-based device driver under Portable Devices and Microsoft Mobile Device Remote Adapter local area network connection under Network Adapters appear briefly before missing or disappearing again. Any connection established is terminated, dropped, disconnected, vanished and disappeared within a few seconds. When the connection is not established, user cannot or unable to sync the PC with desktop, and can’t install applications or transfer files. Soft reset or hard reset the device also does not help to perfectly fix the problem.

Microsoft publishes several troubleshooting tips to fix device unable to connec issue. One of the cause appears to be Windows Live OneCare that blocks the device connectivity. To allow the device to connect via Windows Live OneCare, enable (check) the ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center – synchronize my mobile devices with my computer rule in Firewall Connection Tool button (Firewall tab) of Windows Live OneCare settings. Also in Firewall Tab, click on Advanced button and go to Ports and Protocols tab. Add and create a port called Windows Mobile Device Center with TCP Port Range as 5721, For Connections dropdown as Inbound [local ports] and Scope is set to Local network (subnet).

Other possible cause in failure to connect to WMDC is due to driver installation may not have completed successfully. If you think this may be the case, follow these steps:

Keep the WM device connected.
Go to Start > Start Search.
Enter Device Manager or devmgmt.msc to launch the Device Manager window.
Look under the Network adapters node for Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter. If this is not present, skip to step 5. Otherwise, right-click Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter and choose to Uninstall.
Look under the Mobile Devices node for Microsoft USB Sync. If this is not present, skip to step 6. Otherwise, right-click Microsoft USB Sync and choose to Uninstall.
Disconnect and reconnect the WM device. The device driver for the PPC Phone will re-install and Windows Mobile Device Center will launch.

If Microsoft resolution doesn’t help, try to disable the Advanced Network Functionality mode on the Windows Mobile device from the USB to PC icon in Connections of Start Menu Settings. After turning off Advanced Network Functionality, the device will be connected via a USB Serial driver, the sync will be done via native Smartphone USB Sync device driver and no LAN network connection is made.

However, the most likely and most possible resolution for dropped connection and not connected problem for Windows Mobile Device Center is related to Windows Media Player process. On connection with a Windows Mobile device, system will launch wmplayer.exe process, even though Windows Media Player is not ran or opened, and user is not syncing any music, song or media files at internal memory storage or SD memory card.

The wmplayer.exe process for unknown reason will terminate the connection, according to experience of a few users. As wmplayer.exe process won’t terminate itself, user have to end and kill the process as fast as possible once the Pocket PC device is connected to computer and wmplayer.exe process service is launched.

To manually terminate the wmplayer.exe, right click on Windows Taskbar and click on Task Manager. Then click on Image Name to sort the list of processes according to name alphabetically. Locate and highlight wmplayer.exe near the bottom of the list, and click on End Process button. After a while, the device will install with correct driver, connect and WMDC will sync. If the device still doesn’t connect and sync, try to disconnect and reconnect the device again, and kill off any wmplayer.exe service that run after connecting as soon as possible.

If system is not responding to or takes no action to detect, install connect any plugged in Windows Mobile device (and of course WMDC no sync action too), it may be causing by existing wmplayer.exe already existed, blocking future sync process. To fix the issue, open Task Manager (taskmgr in Start Search), and search for any wmplayer.exe service that is running, and kill or end all these processes. Re-connect the Windows Mobile device, and Windows Mobile Device Center should connect and sync properly.

Intel introduced the 36-bit physical addressing mode called PAE (Physical Address Extension, read Wikipedia reference or MSDN reference) since Intel Pentium Pro processor to allow 32-bit operating systems to use more than 4 GB of physical memory. However, even with x86 or x86-x64 PAE supported CPU processor, in most Windows system, PAE is disabled by default, and user has to manually turn on the PAE support in operating system in order to recognize and use more than 4 GB of physical RAM memory, with the exception of Windows Vista.

A lot of technical support and troubleshooting sites for Windows Vista publishes a tweak or tip that asking user to manually enable PAE support in 32-bit Windows Vista with the following command to use more than 4GB of memory.

BCDEdit /set PAE forceenable

According to MSDN Library article, “on a computer that supports hardware-enabled Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system that supports DEP, PAE is automatically enabled when DEP is enabled (Data Execution Protection, DEP is enabled by default in Windows Vista) and, on all 32-bit versions of the Windows operating system, except Windows Server 2003 with SP1, PAE is disabled when you disable DEP. Thus, PAE mode is always enabled by default in Windows Vista as it’s required for hardware-based DEP / NX. And 32-bit client versions of Windows Vista (and also Windows XP) will never support more than a 4GB address spaces, even with PAE enabled, according to another MSDN Library article. Thus, 4 GB physical RAM memory limit on 32-bit Windows Vista is an artificial software based lock placed by Windows Vista operating system to limit the availability of the portion of memory larger than 4 gigabytes in a system with motherboard that support more than 4GB worth of physical address space.

Thus, many users disappointed and baffled that even though after ‘enabling’ PAE support in 32-bit (x86) Windows Vista (which in actuality is not necessary), they still cannot see full 4GB or more (most system showing only around 3.5 or 3.25 GB of memory due to some memory address space been mapped to use as reserve for system peripherals) of physical memory or RAM modules installed, although Windows Vista SP1 can correctly display the amount of installed memory (not memory available to use) up to 4GB in size.

Currently, the only known method to enable support for physical memory bigger than 4GB in size in Windows Vista 32-bit version is using the hack to replace the limitation files with copy from 32-bit Windows Server 2008, which supports and can see more than 4 GB memory. However, user using the hack has to deal with some consequences especially product activation issue, unless you have license or genuine product key for Windows Server 2008.

Fire up the Windows Explorer and navigate your way to the %SYSTEMROOT% \ INF folder. What the heck is that thingy with the percentage signs? It's a variable. For most people, %SYSTEMROOT% is C:\Windows. For others, it may be E:\WinXP. Get it? Okay, on with the hack! In the INF folder, open sysoc.inf (but not before making a BACKUP copy first). Before your eyes glaze over, look for the line containing "msmsgs" in it. Near the end of that particular line, you'll notice that the word "hide" is not so hidden. Go ahead and delete "hide" (so that the flanking commas are left sitting next to one another). Save the file and close it. Now, open the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Click the Add / Remove Windows Components icon. You should see "Windows Messenger" in that list. Remove the checkmark from its box, and you should be set. NOTE: there are other hidden system components in that sysoc.inf file, too. Remove "hide" and the subsequent programs at your own risk.

Amazon hopes to sell a million Kindles by the end of t

An Israeli hacker claims to have broken the copyright protection on Amazon's Kindle e-reader, reports say.

The hack will allow the ebooks stored on the reader to be transferred as pdf files to any other device.

The hacker, known as Labba, responded to a challenge posted on Israeli hacking forum, hacking.org.

It is the latest in a series of Digital Rights Management hacks, the most famous being the reverse engineering of iTunes.

The Kindle e-book reader has been very successful since it was launched in the US in 2007.

Amazon hopes to have sold a million devices by the end of the year.

It leaves it to individual publishers whether they want to apply DRM but books in its main proprietary format .azw, cannot be transferred to other devices.

It did not immediately respond to the news but it is likely it will attempt to patch its DRM software.

DRM has long divided opinion. While rights holders regard it as a crucial tool to protect copyright, consumers tend to hate it because it limits what can be done with content.

"DRM is not an effective way of preventing copying nor is it a good way of making sales. There isn't a customer out there saying 'what I need is an electronic book that does less," novelist and co-editor of the Boing Boing blog Cory Doctorow told the BBC when the Kindle was launched.

As soon as a new DRM system is active, hackers begin to try and break it.

Most famously Jon Lech Johansen, known as DVD Jon, cracked the copy protection on DVDs in 1999.

He went on to break the copyright protection on iTunes, leading Apple to offer DRM-free music.

DVD Jon now runs a company with an application to take the pain out of moving different types of content between devices.

Ban on sales of Microsoft Word upheld

Word 2003 and 2007 are the most common versions on the market

Microsoft has failed in its attempt to dismiss a court case that would stop it selling Word.

The software giant appealed against a ruling which found it infringed a patent owned by Canadian company i4i.

With the failure of the appeal Microsoft must now pay i4i damages of $290m (£182m) and comply with an injunction ending the sales of some versions of Word.

The injunction is scheduled to go into effect on 11 January.

Microsoft said the ban would prohibit the sale of all available versions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office software from the date that the injunction comes into force.

Versions of the software sold before that date, including Word 2003 and Word 2007, will not be hit by the ruling.

"We have been preparing for this possibility since the District Court issued its injunction in August 2009 and have put the wheels in motion to remove this little-used feature from these products," Microsoft said.

"Therefore, we expect to have copies of Microsoft Word 2007 and Office 2007, with this feature removed, available for US sale and distribution by the injunction date," it said.

"Beta versions of Microsoft Word 2010 and Microsoft Office 2010, which are available now for downloading, do not contain the technology covered by the injunction," Microsoft added.

Microsoft was accused by i4i of infringing on a 1998 XML patent in its Word 2003 and Word 2007 programs.

Word uses XML, or the Extensible Markup Language, to open .XML, .DOCX, and .DOCM files.

The initial ruling in the court dispute between i4i and Microsoft was made in August. At that time Microsoft was found to have infringed the i4i patent and the Canadian firm was awarded damages.

The injunction on sales was imposed at the same time but a Microsoft appeal initially overturned that ban on US sales. The stay on the injunction has now run out and, as a result, Microsoft must stop selling infringing versions of Word.

Microsoft said it might file further appeals, but that it was keen to comply with the injunction.

"While we are moving quickly to address the injunction issue, we are also considering our legal options," it said.
